Exploring Waukeen's Rest in Baldur's Gate 3 presents players with several intense time-sensitive encounters and emotional side quests. Among these scenarios is the search for a missing dowry belonging to Benryn and his deceased wife, Mirileth. Locating this hidden item allows you to resolve a poignant story arc while deciding whether to act altruistically or prioritize personal gain.

Starting the Trapped Man Quest at Waukeen's Rest

To initiate this quest line, players must navigate to the burning estate of Waukeen's Rest located in the northern region of Act 1. Upon arriving, head into the burning building on the upper floor to locate Benryn trapped under heavy timber. Succeeding on a Strength check frees him from the rubble so he can safely exit the burning structure.

After escaping the flames, Benryn learns of his wife Mirileth's tragic demise inside the neighboring structure. Speaking with him reveals that the couple recently argued over a valuable family dowry. This conversation prompts your party to search the surrounding property for the hidden ring.

Finding the Exact Location of the Dowry

The dowry is not located inside the main burning tavern, but rather in a nearby barn on the grounds. Head toward the western courtyard and enter the adjacent barn filled with hay bales. Position your party near the central haystack to automatically trigger a Perception skill check.

If any companion passes the check, a hidden gilded chest will be highlighted within the hay. Opening this container allows you to retrieve the Dowry Ring. If your party fails the skill check, you can cast Speak with Dead on Mirileth's body to discover the exact location directly.

Deciding What to Do with the Dowry Ring

Once the Dowry Ring is in your possession, you must decide how to handle the situation with Benryn. Returning to the grieving widower allows you to hand over the ring so he can honor his late wife's memory. Completing the interaction this way provides story closure and earns positive approval from good-aligned companions.

Alternatively, players can choose to keep the valuable ring for themselves or sell it to vendors for gold. Pocketing the item will disappoint certain moral party members, but it yields immediate financial profit early in your adventure. Regardless of your choice, knowing where to look makes completing this encounter straightforward.
